Water Cycle
“The Water Cycle .” USGS Water Science School , water.usgs.gov/edu/watercycle.html
Most students learn about the water cycle in elementary, but, like most things, the cycle is made up of many more parts than what is initially taught. The water cycle starts with condensation and continues to precipitation and infiltration, but the path water takes during infiltration, differs in every case. The chart above illustrates the different paths water can take. It can go anywhere from underground water storage, to being expelled in underwater vents. The path taken by water may differ, but it'll forever be apart of this cycle.
Wai
In ancient Hawai'i the Hawaiians coined the term: waiwai, it originates from the word wai which means water. The Hawaiians knew the importance of water and placed great value in it.
Field Trip Narrative
Being able to travel to Waihe'e to explore the main water source for the windward side of the island of Oahu is extremely exciting to me. Having the ability to explore the water tunnel and see the falls is seemingly a very special experience. Before the excursion we had a discussion about the importance of being present. I think it'll be difficult to stay present, as it can be difficult to push certain thoughts of sight.
I found that the bus ride down to Waihe'e was mostly spent accomplishing small tasks in order to enter into a space of mindfulness. Once we reached Waihe'e we were able to take in the beautiful scenery around us. the group I was apart of went to go see the water tunnel first. It was quite fascinating to see how the tunnel has held up since its first use. The constant flow of water was melodious and very relaxing, theres something extremely special about being in the same space as water which has lacked sunlight from months to years.
After the water tunnel my group went to go explore the falls. The falls in a common place for tourist or adventures seekers, it is commonly known as "Ice Ponds". The hike to and from the falls wasn't difficult, but it was slippery. The falls itself was a beautiful sight, and the roaring of the water could be heard through a majority of the hike.
